DAE JANG-GEUM
Dae Jang Geum; literally The Great Jang Geum, aired in the United States as Jewel in the Palace, is a 2003 TV series produced by South Korean TV channel MBC (Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation).
Loosely based on the historical figure depicted in the Annals of Joseon Dynasty, the show focuses on Jang-geum (played by Lee Young Ae), the first female royal physician of the Joseon Dynasty of Korea. Jewel in the Palace has 25 DVDs in 70 episodes. It is a historical drama with parts comedy, biography, romance, and action. it is also in part a food movie, as it highlights how nutrition is a important healing component in Traditional Asian Medicine (TCM)). A lot of the action, intrigue, and drama takes place in the royal court kitchen, where Jang Geum's mother was a royal court lady in the kitchen and where Jang Geum herself spends a large part of her life.
Set during the early 16th century, you will see the characters cook humble dishes, royal ceremonial meals, and herbal remedies. Traditional diagnostic, herbology and acupuncture methods are the bases throughout the story. In the struggle for life, death and political power this film demonstrates how the conflict between knowledge, envy, greed and sex discrimination shapes history. A male driven medical society is challenged by a female doctor with intelligence, perception, creativity, ethics and love, establishing that women matter. The film is in Korean with English subtitles.
